Engineered Wood Fiber for Playgrounds

Engineered wood fiber (EWF), also known as playground wood chips, has become a popular type of playground surfacing due to their low initial cost, ease of installation, local availability and low lifetime overall cost. Other common types of playground surfacing include poured in place playground surfacing, rubber tiles, playground sand, etc.

All of these playground surfacing products are readily available through Pacific Play Systems for delivery and installation throughout Southern California, including, but not limited to, communities such as Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Lemon Grove, San Marcos, Escondido, Vista, Oceanside, Irvine, etc.

Engineered Wood Fiber & Playground Safety

Playground safety standards set forth by the ASTM F1487-11 and CPSC 325 mandate that an impact absorbing type of playground surfacing must be placed under and around all commercial play equipment for public use.

Depending upon the type of playground surfacing used, its cost can be a major part of the budget for any commercial playground facility, whether it is for a new facility or upgrading playground surfacing at an existing playground site. Given the recent budget cuts for cities and public schools, it is now, more than ever, imperative that site operators choose a playground surfacing type that is affordable, reliable and easy to maintain.

Engineered wood fiber has emerged as an extremely reliable source of playground surfacing which is also capable of providing ADA access to playgrounds when compacted and maintained properly.

Engineered Wood Fiber Uses

Engineered wood fiber is an ideal source of playground surfacing for commercial installations at public schools, parks, churches and homeowner’s associations due to their low cost, ease of installation and low lifetime overall cost when compared to synthetic playground surfacing such as poured in place rubberized surfacing or rubber tiles. To be most effective, we recommend installing EWF to a compacted depth of 12″.

Our wood fibers can be blown in for ease of installation, or can be manually installed via manpower or grading equipment, such as with backhoes, etc. In areas with poor drainage, we recommend installing a proper drainage system in order to allow the playground area to drain properly during heavy rainfall.

A heavy type of filter fabric can also be installed below the surface to keep the vegetation from coming through.

Made Locally - Fast Installation

The wood fiber should be topped off every couple of years as needed to maintain the desired depth for optimum protection for children against accidental falls. At Pacific Play Systems, our brand of EWF is locally manufactured and available for delivery and installation to communities in Southern California, including Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside, Imperial and Orange County.

Our designers and engineers are always available to work with our customers in selecting the most economical playground equipment surfacing, while making sure the selected playground surfacing meets or exceeds the minimum shock absorbency requirements for the critical fall height of the playground equipment used.
